Lightning claimed 12 lives in Ghazipur and Ballia districts of Uttar Pradesh in last 24 hours as heavy rains lashed parts of the state.Lightning killed more than 56 in Bihar over the past 24 hours as heavy rains and thunderstorms hit the state.Besides, Madhya Pradesh reported 16 deaths in the last two days though the state revenue control room here has confirmed seven. According to reports, six persons, including five minors , were killed in Ballia district, the six other deaths being reported from various parts of Ghazipur. “We are waiting for more reports from the affected districts.Unconfirmed reports said nine other people, all of them farm workers, were killed after being struck by lightning in six remote villages in the state. Only then will we be able to say anything regarding the final toll,” principal secretary (disaster management) said. Katihar, Saharsa and Saran districts also recorded three deaths.The disaster management team said the rural areas are in a bad condition. More deaths were reported from other areas, including Gaya and West Champaran. Deaths were also reported from Nalanda, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad and Purnea.A government spokesman said that heavy rains were recorded in Lalganj, Raniganj and Chail, each of which received 10 cm of rainfall, followed by 8 cm each in Manjhanpur and Baberu, 7 cm each in Gyanpur and Rajghat, while Mirzapur, Varanasi, Safipur, Ballia and Mau received 6 cm of rainfall each.
